How does the NFL mode work?
A total of 32 teams from the USA are participating in the championship. These are divided into two conferences. In contrast to the NBA (basketball) and NHL (ice hockey), however, the teams are not divided into East and West, but into NFC and AFC. The NFC is derived from the NFL founded in 1920. In 1960 the league split and the AFL (American Football League) was created. To determine the true champions of these two leagues, the first Super Bowl was held in 1967.
In 1970, the NFL was re-established and the teams were split into AFC and NFC. In each of the two Conferences, there are 16 teams, which in turn were reassigned to four divisions (East, North, South, West). Each team must play 16 games in the basic round. Six games will be played against members of the same division, and eight games will be played against all teams from two other divisions, one from the NFC and one from the AFC. These change from year to year.
Two other games of the Regular Seaison are played against teams from the Conference that have occupied the same place in the division in the previous season.
Which teams will make the NFL playoffs?
In total, the top 12 teams qualify for the playoffs, competing against each other in knockout duels. Unlike in football, the winner of the duel is determined in just one game. The two best teams in the conference will receive a walk-through for the first playoff round. The remaining four teams of each conference play against each other in the so-called Wild Card Games. All division winners will receive a place in the playoff. So it can happen that in the same conference a team misses the playoffs despite a better season’s balance.
The teams are seeded according to their season balance. The best team of the preliminary round secures the home team for the entire play-offs, on the other hand the top seeded team always plays against the worst remaining player in the play-off.
